Contraception Quiz
8/16/2007 3:12 AM

How "up" are you on birth control? No worries...
take the quiz and find out - plus learn what you didn't
know! Good luck!

1. What is the difference between contraceptive and safer-sex
devices? A.) Birth control devices prevent you from getting pregnant,
while safer-sex devices prevent the spread of sexually
transmitted diseases. B.) Contraceptive devices cost more money than safer-sex
devices. C.) All safer-sex devices must be prescribed by a doctor,
while birth control devices are available without a prescription.
D.) All birth control devices must be prescribed by a doctor,
while safer-sex devices are available without a prescription.
E.) There is no difference.

The answer is A - While all birth control or contraceptive
devices are designed to prevent unwanted pregnancy, only
a few also prevent the spread of STDs.

2. Barrier methods of contraception prevent pregnancy
by blocking sperm from entering the cervix. Which of the
following methods of birth control are barrier methods?
A.) Cervical Cap B.) Diaphragm C.) Male Condom D.) Female Condom E.) All of the above

The answer is E - Each of these devices is a barrier method.
The cervical cap and diaphragm last a fairly long time,
but need to be prescribed by a doctor and are not as effective
at preventing STD infections. Male and female condoms
are one-use birth control methods, but you can purchase
them at most drug and grocery stores, and they are effective
at lowering the chance of STD transmission in addition
to preventing pregnancy.

3. Hormonal methods of contraception use hormones to interfere
temporarily with a woman's ability to get pregnant.
Which of the following are considered hormonal methods
of birth control? A.) Norplant B.) Depo-Provera C.) The Pill and Mini-Pills D.) Progestin IUD E.) All of the above

The answer is E - All of the above are hormonal methods of
birth control. They are great for regulating your menstrual
cycle and preventing unwanted pregnancy, but they do not
prevent the transmission of STDs. Some women have unpleasant
reactions to hormones. You'll require a doctor's
assistance to use any of these methods: Norplant is implanted
beneath the skin, Depo-Provera is injected, the Pill and
the Mini-Pill are prescribed and the IUD is inserted by
the doctor.

4. Spermicidal methods of contraception kill sperm before
pregnancy can occur. Which of the following are types of
spermicidal birth-control methods? A.) Vaginal Contraceptive Film B.) Contraceptive Foam C.) The Sponge D.) Condoms with Spermicidal Foam E.) All of the above

The answer is E - When used correctly, all of the above spermicidal
methods can be very effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy,
especially when used with a condom. While spermicides
can kill some viruses and bacteria, their effectiveness
in real-use has been questioned in some recent research.
All of these spermicides are available at drug and grocery
stores, without a prescription.

5. Abstinence is the best way to prevent pregnancy AND halt
the transmission of STDs. What is the second most effective
method? A.) Diaphragm with Spermicide B.) The Sponge C.) Contraceptive Foam D.) Condoms E.) IUD

The answer is D - While all these methods are good for preventing
unwanted pregnancy, only the correct and consistent use
of a condom is the most effective at preventing both pregnancy
and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

6. Which of the following is a disadvantage of using the
female condom? A.) Gives women more control over their bodies and protects
a greater area of the female body. B.) Can be purchased at most drugstores without seeing
a clinician. C.) Safe and effective at preventing both pregnancy and
STD infection. D.) Can be difficult to insert properly for some women.
E.) Can be modified for use as a protective barrier for oral
or anal sex.

The answer is D - Believe it or not, when used correctly,
the female condom can be 97% effective at preventing pregnancy
and also an excellent form of safer sex. It's inexpensive,
relatively easily available and can be used with almost
any kind of lubricant. So, why do so few people use it? Some
women do find it tricky to insert properly, but with a little
practice, it is no more difficult than putting on a male
condom. So, why not give the female condom a try? You might
be one of the thousands of people who swear by this new form
of birth control!

7. Which of the following methods of birth control can be
purchased without a doctor's prescription? A.) The Pill B.) Vaginal Contraceptive Film C.) Depo-Provera D.) Norplant E.) Diaphragm

The answer is B - You can purchase Vaginal Contraceptive
Film (VCF) in most drug stores or online without a prescription.
The Pill must be prescribed by a doctor, Depo-Provera and
Norplant are implanted by a doctor, and a gynecologist
must properly fit you with a diaphragm.

8. Which of the following statements is false? A.) The Copper T IUD contains copper and can be used to prevent
pregnancy for up to ten years; the Progestin IUD uses the
hormone progesterone, a synthetic form of the hormone
produced by a woman's ovaries during each monthly
cycle. B.) Only a doctor can fit a woman with an IUD. C.) The IUD is a dangerous birth control device that cannot
be safely used by most women. D.) Using the IUD does not prevent the transmission of STDs.
E.) IUDs are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

The false statment is C - While IUDs have a controversial
history, newer IUDs have been completely redesigned,
making them a safe, convenient and desirable method of
birth control for women who have already had at least one
baby.

9. Is a vasectomy (male sterilization) always reversible?
Yes or No

Not every vasectomy is reversible. While many people are
under the impression that sterilization is easily undone,
sterilization should be considered permanent -- reversals
can be very expensive and may not be successful. Although
sperm can be found in the ejaculate of some men who have their
vasectomies reversed, only 50% are successful at fathering
children. Some sterilized men also regret their decision
at some point in their lives, mostly due to a change in marital
status, the death of a child, or a renewed desire to have
children. For these reasons, sterilization is not recommended
unless you are absolutely certain that you would never
wish to have another child.

10. Is a tubal ligation (female sterilization) always
reversible? Yes or No

Not every tubal ligation is reversible. Many people are
under the impression that sterilization is easily undone;
however, sterilization should be considered permanent
-- reversals can cost over $10, 000 and may not be successful.
Some sterilized women regret their decision at some point
in their lives, mostly due to a change in marital status,
the death of a child, or a renewed desire to have children.
For this reason, sterilization is not recommended unless
you are absolutely certain that you would never wish to
have another child.

This is the kind of info that should be taught in sex ed in
school to prevent both unwanted pregnancies and disease.
The more education, the less chance of accidents and spread
of infection. Thanks for the very informative quiz, forward it wherever
you can!

Another good point about tubal ligation is that it is NOT
100% effective, I have a friend who had 2 more kids AFTER
her sterilization
